Via Romana: Infrastructure-Driven Fast Travel

Via Romana is a unique modification that offers a fast travel system available only after creating road infrastructure between destinations. This encourages players to actively build and explore the world.

FAQ (Title)

Why do I see "region underdeveloped" even when I'm on path blocks?

If you used an earlier version of Via Romana and then updated, try deleting the configuration file and letting it regenerate.

What can be configured through settings?

  • The area of blocks checked around the player (size of the required road)
  • Minimum and maximum distance between recorded path nodes (maximum shows how much the player can deviate from the path)
  • Minimum and maximum distance for the entire path
  • Required "quality" of infrastructure: the proportion of infrastructure blocks needed in the radius
  • Block IDs, tags, and string matches that are considered infrastructure blocks (dynamically added to our own via_romana:path_block tag)
  • Dimensions through which the mod allows path creation (travel between dimensions is not allowed)
  • Entities allowed to teleport (including vehicles like boats or horses)
  • Duration of travel fatigue (recovery time after moving between destinations)
  • How far away path nodes should be displayed
  • Resolution of the fast travel map interface (server-side)

Why doesn't the connection between signs disappear when the path is broken?

We considered implementing this feature early on, but due to performance impact when loading chunks and the lack of benefits from the feature, it was not implemented. We understand that some players may expect this behavior, but adding another method for griefers does not justify the major code changes required.

Which signs work?

The mod is mainly designed for standard Minecraft signs and signs from the Supplementaries mod, but it should work with some others as well. Let us know if a sign from another mod doesn't have the "Add to Path" button in its menu.

Are there any planned features?

We've achieved most of what we wanted in version 2.0, but there are some things we're still considering for future releases (such as a better system for charting paths across water).

What is Rasa Novum?

We're a small group of mostly beginner developers creating mods for our modpack and future server of the same name.
