Thief
This mod significantly complicates the process of robbing villages, requiring players to carefully plan before committing illegal actions. It extends Minecraft's standard reputation system by adding new mechanics for influencing relationships with villagers and introducing a witness system.
Crime Mechanics
The modification features three levels of offense severity: Light, Medium, and Heavy. Each of them decreases your reputation among all villagers who witnessed the crime. Heavy offenses lower reputation to the point where iron golems begin attacking the player.
Crime recording rules:
- Iron golems (and guards, if Guard Villagers mod is installed) attack players for medium and heavy offenses if they witnessed the crime themselves
- Crimes are only counted in "protected" structures — by default, villages only
- Villagers perceive any block destruction as theft, even if the player placed them originally
Types of Offenses:
Block Destruction: Light: crops, hay bales, lanterns, campfires Medium: chests, barrels, job site blocks, beds Heavy: bell
Object Interaction: Medium: opening chests and barrels
Killing: Medium: pigs, sheep, cows, chickens, cats, horses, donkeys, mules, llamas
Beds: Light: evicting a villager from their bed Medium: sleeping in a bed claimed by a villager
Witness System
For a crime to be registered, witnesses must see the player committing it. Detection distance is influenced by stealthiness — sneaking, low light levels, and invisibility potions help remain unnoticed.
Reputation System
Within the crime mechanics framework, reputation is divided into seven levels:
- Hated: iron golems protect the villager and attack the player
- Unwelcome: villager refuses to trade
- Distrusted: price increases (vanilla mechanic)
- Neutral
- Accepted: light offenses are ignored
- Respected: medium offenses are ignored
- Honored: heavy offenses are ignored

Increasing Reputation
Besides standard reputation enhancement methods (trading, curing zombie villagers), players can:
- Give gifts to villagers
- Defend the village from raids
- Using an emerald while holding Sneak key allows giving it to the villager to improve relationships
- Looking at a villager while holding an emerald shows current reputation level
When committing a crime, the average reputation from all witnesses is calculated — treating villagers well can save you from consequences.
