The Midnight Lurker
This mod was inspired by the popular "Man From The Fog" and "Cave Dweller" modifications, offering players a completely new adversary that appears at night or deep in caves with the sole purpose of terrifying you.
How This Creepy Inhabitant Works
The creature spawns near the player and patiently waits to be discovered. When this happens, you have two options:
- Stare directly at the creature - this will scare it and cause it to teleport away
- Approach closer without looking at it - this will anger the monster and make it attack you (if it cannot catch the victim within a minute of chasing, it will also teleport away)
The peculiarity of this creature is that it can break wooden doors if you try to lock yourself away from it. The only protection is iron doors.
Mod Evolution: New Features and Variations
With each new version, the mod became more refined. In version 1.0.4 and above, the creature teleports after killing a player. From version 1.1.9, it can exit boats and minecarts. Version 1.2.2 added the ability to become invisible and follow the player, as well as a chance to become angry when directly looked at.
A real breakthrough occurred in version 2.0.0 when various variants of this creature appeared:
- Faker - appears at insanity stage 6, scares the player and increases the insanity level
- Hider - burrows into the ground when looked at, leaving behind Void Gateways
- Shadow - stalks the player in dark caves
- Unprovoked - attacks without visible reason
- Shapeshifter - disguises itself as villagers and animals
- Neutral/Runaway - watches the player and either runs away or approaches
Insanity System and Void Gateways
When the Neutral variant appears, the insanity timer of the nearest player starts. Killing this creature stops the progression of insanity. At stage 7, the Aggressive variant appears, which can break through walls, crawl in narrow spaces, and pursue the player underground.
Void Gateways are portals that the creature leaves in random places. Interacting with them can either scare the player or reward them with a reduction in insanity level.
Settings and Configuration
The mod offers extensive settings through the configuration file. You can adjust:
- Spawn frequency of various creature variants
- Chase music
- Insanity and amnesia effects
- Possibility of appearing in the Nether and caves
- Behavior when looked at and attacked
- Chase duration and much more
To edit the config, go to the config folder of your game and open the file in any text editor.
Sound Effects
If the mod's sounds seem too loud, they can be adjusted in the game options menu. The main sounds are in the "Friendly Creatures" section, and atmospheric sounds are in "Jukebox/Note Block".

The mod is created for Forge and continues to evolve, adding new mechanics and behavior patterns for this creepy night inhabitant.
