Postmortem

The Postmortem mod completely overhauls Minecraft's death mechanics, inspired by Requiem.

When you first enter the world, you'll face a choice: sign the contract or refuse it. By entering into the Soul Shattering Contract upon death, you'll transform into a ghost capable of possessing undead creatures [List of mobs provided below].

The advantage of this approach is that you always remain near your death location, so you'll never have to walk back to your items again! Just find a suitable host, pick up your belongings, and continue on your way.

However, these undead hosts have drawbacks. Most of them burn in sunlight unless wearing a helmet, they have less health compared to a living player, they cannot regenerate health normally, and they cannot run or swim. When you're ready to revive, you can eat a Golden Apple (as a zombie-type host) or a Revitalizing Apple (as a skeleton-type host) to heal yourself. However, this won't break your contract.

If you grow tired of the signed contract, you can break it using a Rebirth Totem, although the process to obtain one is lengthy and complex. First, you need to find an Ancient Dagger - a powerful weapon somewhere between a Netherite axe and sword, available as rare loot in an Ancient City. Then you must use the Dagger to kill an Evoker, who will drop a Cracked Rebirth Totem. Finally, you must insert a Purified Diamond (also obtainable as rare loot in the Ancient City OR craftable using an expensive recipe requiring Nether items) into the Cracked Totem to repair it. After repairing it, you can right-click the Totem (only in your own living body!) to Break the Contract!

Of course, if you ignore the contract at the beginning and discard it, you can always acquire a new one through Woodland Mansion loot. There's another, more humorous use for this item, but I'll leave that for you to discover.
