Overgeared - Complete Overhaul of Tool and Armor Crafting
Overgeared is a comprehensive Minecraft modification that fundamentally transforms the system for creating tools and armor, introducing players to a realistic forging system where the outcome depends on skills and preparation. Inspired by mods like Hot Iron and TerraFirmaCraft, this development offers a unique and deep gaming experience with emphasis on individual approach and progressive development.
The mod is fully compatible with data packs and uses recipes based on vanilla crafting mechanics for easy integration. For convenient recipe viewing, it's highly recommended to install Just Enough Items (JEI).
New Items and Blocks
Steel Equipment
A complete line of steel tools and armor is added, filling the gap between iron and diamond items.
Smithing Hammer
Available in steel and copper variants. Used to initiate the forging process. By crouching and right-clicking on a smithing anvil, you start the forging minigame. With the same actions on a stone block, it transforms into a stone anvil.
Smithing Tongs
Available in iron and steel versions. Hold them in any hand to protect yourself from contact with heated metal.
Smithing Anvil
The main workstation for forging items. Place ingredients in the 3×3 grid and activate forging using a smithing hammer. The forging minigame determines the quality of the final result.
Stone Anvil
Simplified version of the smithing anvil for early game stage. Created by crouching and right-clicking on a stone block with any smithing hammer in hand.
- Requires fewer resources
- Has limited number of uses
- Allows creating items only up to "Well Forged" level
- Supports basic forging operations (for example, iron tools)
- Necessary for transitioning to full-scale forging
Stone Knapping System
The system is inspired by traditional flint processing techniques. Create stone tool parts through a special 3×3 interface with interactive control.
- Obtain rocks by repeatedly right-clicking flint on stone blocks
- Use rocks in a special interface to create tool heads
Forging System and Tool Quality
Forging completely replaces the traditional method of creating tools and armor. After placing materials in the smithing anvil, players perform a minigame using the smithing hammer, where pressing accuracy determines the forging quality of the finished item.
Possible quality levels:
- Poorly Forged
- Well Forged
- Expertly Forged
- Perfectly Forged
- Masterwork (rare chance or guaranteed with blueprint)
Forging quality directly affects:
- Durability
- Attack damage
- Attack speed
- Mining speed
Tool Head Modifiers
Many tool parts now have Polished and Unpolished states that affect the maximum possible quality when forging the final item.
- Unpolished parts are the standard form
- Use a grindstone for polishing
- Unpolished tool heads when crafted into tools decrease forging quality
Blueprint System
Blueprints determine the maximum achievable quality when forging an item. Created in a new block - the drafting table with the addition of a leather manuscript.
Each blueprint tracks:
Quality: Blueprint level (from novice to master)Uses: Progress for leveling upUsesToLevel: Threshold before quality improvementToolType: Restricts the category of forged tool
Blueprints can be upgraded through forging and copied by combining with an empty blueprint (result will have lower quality).
- Master-level equipment can only be created with master-level blueprints
- Combine with Empty Blueprint to create a copy with degraded quality
- Use sticks to adjust the gap of created tool head (attachments)
Diamond Crafting Overhaul
Diamond equipment can no longer be created on the standard crafting table.
- Need to upgrade steel equipment at the smithing table
- Requires a special smithing template found in Overworld structures.
