Observant Villagers
Village Reputation System
This mod introduces a complex reputation system that makes villagers smarter, more realistic, and dynamic. While in a village, your actions can increase or decrease your reputation, which directly affects how villagers behave towards you.
For example, if a villager catches you stealing items from a chest using a hopper, your reputation will decrease. Conversely, defending the village from a raid will increase your standing among the local residents.
Reputation Levels
When entering a village, text appears at the top of the screen showing your current reputation level. The system includes the following levels:
- Welcomed (requires 10+ points): trade prices decrease
- Neutral (standard level): behavior as in the original game
- Weary (requires -4 points): some traders increase prices
- Distrusting (requires -8 points): some villagers refuse to trade
- Exiled (requires -14 points): villagers run away, iron golems attack on sight
Consequences of Actions
Your actions have real consequences. For example, if villagers see you stealing a smoker, a -1 will appear next to your reputation level with a corresponding sound effect. Witnesses to the crime may temporarily refuse to trade with you.
Positive and Negative Actions
Good deeds:
- Maximizing trade with a villager: +2
- Defending the village from a raid: +5
- Redemption trades: +?
Bad deeds:
- Opening a chest/barrel: -2
- Destroying work blocks: -2
- Destroying torches, lanterns, crops: -1
- Using a hopper for theft: -2
- Killing a villager or iron golem: -8
- Killing a village leader: -10
Village Leaders
When you first reach the "Weary" level in your world, a village leader will immediately run to you to speak. Leaders are responsible for maintaining order and organizing village life. Through them, you can atone for your misdeeds with special trade offers.
How to Avoid Punishment
There are several ways to avoid the consequences of bad actions:
- Wearing a pumpkin on your head prevents reputation point loss, but if caught, you'll be declared a bandit
- Invisibility potions allow you to act unnoticed, but the village leader may become suspicious
- Bribing witnesses with emeralds can restore lost points
