Houdini Block

The Houdini Block modification presents a unique block that unlocks capabilities previously available only with debug tools or commands. It's a discovery for builders seeking to push beyond standard game mechanics.

Inspiration Sources

The idea originated from two sources: the ingenuity of builders who use unconventional block properties (such as fences connecting where it shouldn't be possible), and popular "Minecraft Domino" videos where players exploited bugs in older versions to create floating sand, gravel, and concrete powder blocks that would then fall in cascade.

Block Operation Modes

The Houdini Block offers four placement modes:

  • Default Mode: prevents updates to neighboring blocks when the Houdini block is broken
  • Prevent on Placement: blocks updates to neighboring blocks when placing the Houdini block
  • Complete Protection: prevents any updates both during placement and destruction of the block
  • Block Replacement: similar to "Complete Protection", but the Houdini block replaces the target block instead of being placed adjacent to the selected face

Tip: Use Shift + Right-click in the air to cycle between modes

Compatibility

Current supported Minecraft versions:

  • 1.21-1.21.1: full support
  • 1.21.4: support planned
  • Versions below 1.21: support not planned

Requirements

The mod requires Architectury API and ChimericLib library. The modification works with Fabric and NeoForge loaders, with installation required on both client and server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why this name and simple texture? It's a magical block that serves as the opposite of a redstone block. If one commands blocks to "do something", the other says "do nothing".

Won't this make the game too easy? Possibly, but the same could be said about many modifications. The goal of Houdini Block is to give builders a tool for implementing ideas usually accessible only in creative mode. You decide how actively to use this block in your gameplay. Choosing your playstyle is one of Minecraft's greatest strengths.

Working Mechanics

Houdini Block emerged in response to the community's desire for a more accessible tool for complex building projects. While the debug stick remains the domain of creative mode, this block makes similar functions available in any game mode, opening new horizons for architectural solutions.
